South Africa is facing a literacy crisis – 78% of children in grade 4 are still learning-to-read, rather than reading to learn, indicative of the lowest levels of literacy in the world. We must ignite a love of reading amongst our children, but with only 2%* of books in SA published in African language and relatable content, the majority of children are unable to learn to read in their mother tongue, making learning more challenging for them.
Our solution was the Cadbury #HomegrownStories Library – where we inspired generosity, overcame literacy barriers and empowered inclusive Mzansi-style storytelling, crowdsourcing over 22500 #HomegrownStories across the country by creating the Cadbury #HomegrownStories Library as the centre for storytelling innovation.
We enthralled audiences by bringing together the age-old practice of storytelling with new- age innovation, creating the WORLD’S-FIRST DIGITALLY-LED STORYTELLING POP-UP RECORDING STUDIO, utilising cutting-edge voice-to-text and voice-noting technology to make storytelling more progressive and inclusive for all.
